4) REMINDER: Catch Wrestling on the Big Stage
- Tomorrow, March 5th: Josh Barnett vs Hidehiko Yoshida: Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestler vs. Judoka
By the way, read this nice related note that I received last week from historian Mark Hewitt:
Hello Jake,
As always you are to be commended for all your efforts and hard work to keep the legacy of catch wrestling alive.
I enjoy following all the latest goings on of you, your associates and organizations, as well as the seminars and grappling events.
Josh Barnett certainly ranks at the top of the present day catch wrestlers.
And indeed it will be a historic occasion when he takes on Yoshida next month.
According to my records and research on that same date March 5, Santel wrestled to a draw with Nagata in Tokyo (1921); the following day he wrestled to another draw with Shoji. Later in the month in Nagata, Santel beat Shimizu. Those are the only three matches I have been able to confirm during Santel's 1921 tour of Japan. All three opponents were from the Kodokan, and apparently had been discouraged from taking part in pro contests but did it anyway.
Here is a list of all the other Santel jiu-jitsu and mixed style matches that I have been able to authenticate:
11/30/15-San Francisco-Santel beat Noguchi
2/5/16-San Francisco-Santel beat Ito
6/10/16-San Francisco-Ito beat Santel
10/20/17-Seattle-Santel beat Miyake
11/2/17-Seattle-Santel beat Sakai
4/13/22-Portland-Santel beat Miyake
3/10/24-Los Angeles-Santel beat Takahashi
7/4/25-Hilo, Hawaii-Santel drew Higami
10/6/25-Victoria, TX-Santel drew Miyake
1/27/26-Los Angeles-Santel drew Ota
1/17/27-Ogden-Santel beat Miyake
5/17/33-Los Angeles-Santel drew Shikina
9/13/33-Los Angeles-Santel beat Kitahara
10/30/33-Reno-Santel beat Kitahara
Best wishes,
Mark S. Hewitt

For those of you in Southern California on April 12th, you may very well want to find yourself at the next Macebell Strength Training seminar if the feedback from the last one is any indicator:
"Hi Jake, The macebell seminar was great. I'm convinced that it's gotta be one of the greatest workout tools ever. It was very fun, and judging by how my muscles feel, an incredible workout. I want to get certified to teach this.
THANKS,"
