No Holds Barred with Eddie Goldman
No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the undefeated mixed martial arts fighter, and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal. With a record of 6-0 with 5 KOs, Mo Lawal will be getting what he has asked for on Saturday, April 17: a title shot against Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi (28-2-1). This will be one of three title fights on that Strikeforce card, which takes place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, and will be broadcast live in the U.S. on CBS. We spoke with Mo Lawal Monday night to get his take on what to expect in this fight. Confident, candid, and calm, he stated his case why he believes that he will emerge victorious in it. He explained what lessons he has drawn from the recent victories by Mousasi, and why he believes that his overall technique and athleticism are superior. As always, we also discussed some boxing and wrestling, and the status of his plans to compete in both while still fighting in mixed martial arts, as well as other issues related to the combat sports. This interview reveals the real Mo Lawal, and is essential to understanding the mindset of a fighter many consider to be a blossoming star. No Holds Barred: A Saturday Review

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents a Sunday soliloquy reviewing some of the top combat sports action from Saturday, March 6. We discuss the brilliant performance of Devon Alexander, who unified two of the 140-pound boxing titles by stopping Juan Urango in the eighth round after landing two devastating uppercuts, the first for a knockdown and the second for the win. We also comment on the decision win for Vic Darchinyan over Rodrigo Guerrero. In college wrestling, Oklahoma State pulled off the upset by edging Iowa State to win the 2010 Big 12 Wrestling Championships. We discuss some of the top performances from that tournament, including the impressive victory by top 197-pound wrestler Jake Varner of Iowa State. We also comment on some of the action in mixed martial arts, including the TKO win by Dominick Cruz over Brian Bowles and the submission victory by Joseph Benavidez over Miguel Torres on the WEC show. And we close by critically discussing some recent articles from The Harvard Crimson and Bleacher Report which question the direction of mixed martial arts from very different directions. No Holds Barred: Fabio Holanda on Canadian Trials for Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Fabio Holanda about the Canadian North American qualifiers for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010. The Canadian North American qualifiers will take place this Saturday, March 6, at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will feature competitors from all across North America, and is scheduled to start at 11 AM. For those unable to attend the live event, there will be a free webcast of it. All the information about the live event and the webcast can be found on the event's web site, at http://www.abudhabipro.ca. The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 will be held April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. We also begin the show with a commentary on the implications for the combat sports of the huge television audiences which watched the Canada-U.S. Olympic gold medal hockey game this past Sunday. Unlike the NHL, Olympic hockey does not allow fighting. We also comment on the entrance into mixed martial arts of a growing number of long past-their-prime athletes from other sports, including Herschel Walker from American football, Jose Canseco from baseball, and now James Toney from boxing, and what that says about how mixed martial arts is positioned and promoted. No Holds Barred: Mayweather-Mosley and Drug Testing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman provides a candid and unvarnished report from the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane Mosley kickoff news conference, the kind you will not see or hear from the bought-off and clueless boxing media. We focused on the issue of drug testing, since the proposed fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was cancelled because the Pacquiao camp refused to undergo the type of anti-doping procedures which are done in the Olympics. Mayweather then signed to fight Mosley May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with an announced stipulation that both fighters would indeed have to follow the guidelines of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and not just the much weaker and effectively obsolete testing done by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Right before the start of the formal news conference, held Tuesday, March 2, at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square in New York, Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, the lead promoter in this fight and in which Shane Mosley is a managing partner, said that the drug testing would be conducted by USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, an affiliate of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Oscar De La Hoya then added that it will be done "head to toe" for both fighters. After the formal news conference, we again spoke with Schaefer to get more information on what could be an historic step forward for the otherwise decaying sport of boxing. There were plenty of words, but few specifics, as he revealed that there was nothing in the contract for this fight to stipulate the penalties for a positive drug test conducted by USADA. We also spoke with one of the few straight shooters in boxing, Naazim Richardson, who is training Mosley. We spoke with him about why he is so confident that Mosley will be the first fighter to defeat Mayweather, and about his own experiences with the Olympic drug-testing procedures with fighters he has trained, including his son, 2004 Olympian Rock Allen. Plus, we comment on this news conference itself, and why spectacles like this, including the obligatory pull-apart mini-brawl, are only harbingers of death for the sport and business of professional boxing. No Holds Barred: Strikeforce, Boxing, Doping, Wrestling, Grappling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by reviewing the disappointing Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card held February 26 in San Jose, California. We criticize the lack of effective grappling and striking by many of the fighters on that card. We also discuss the latest developments in the battle against dope cheating, including the first positive test of a dope cheat for use of human growth hormone, and how the athletic commissions regulating boxing and mixed martial arts have ignored this important development. With all these problems in mixed martial arts and boxing, we thus conclude by looking forward to the upcoming championship tournaments in college wrestling, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010, the start of the 2010 roller derby season, and more. This type of analysis is what No Holds Barred is about, so listen, learn, comment, and enjoy. No Holds Barred: Stephen Quadros Previews February 26 Strikeforce Challengers Card

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with "The Fight Professor", the veteran broadcaster, actor, and musician Stephen Quadros. He will be one of the announcers on the live Showtime telecast of the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card taking place this Friday night, February 26, at the Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California. The main event of this card pits MMA veteran Trevor Prangley against the exciting Karl "The Psycho" Amoussou in a middleweight fight. The women fighters will once again try to steal the show, as the unbeaten Sarah Kaufman faces Takayo Hashi of Japan for the vacant Strikeforce women's featherweight (135-pound) championship. In another fight to advance the winner towards possible stardom, up-and-coming fighter Luke Rockhold takes on former University of Iowa Hawkeye All-American wrestler Paul Bradley in a middleweight contest. Also on the televised card, James Terry takes on Tarec Saffiedine and Raul Castillo fights Yancy Medeiros. In a lengthy discussion, we previewed this card with "The Fight Professor". We discussed what we might expect in each televised fight. We also commented upon the latest news about Strikeforce. No Holds Barred: Devon Alexander, Juan Urango, Don King

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the 140-pound title unification fight between WBC champion Devon Alexander (19-0, 12 KOs) and IBF champion Juan Urango (22-2-1, 17 KOs). This fight will take place Saturday, March 6, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO. We spoke with both Devon Alexander and Juan Urango on a media conference call this past week, and the discussion of how they each will approach this fight resulted in some verbal fireworks. We also spoke with Don King, who promotes Alexander, about the importance of title unification fights, and also got comments from him on the importance of the Internet media. In addition, we contrast the Alexander-Urango fight, which should be very competitive, with the numerous mismatches and showcase fights typical of boxing, such as the Giovanni Segura-Walter Tello brawl this past Saturday night, February 20, which was entertaining but one-sided. No Holds Barred: Braulio Estima, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with three-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and ADCC 2009 Absolute and 88 kg submission fighting champion, Braulio Estima. Besides being one of the most talented and exciting grapplers in the world, he will be making his professional mixed martial arts debut for Shine Fights at a date and against an opponent to be announced very shortly. While still on a seminar tour of U.S., we spoke with him by phone about his accomplishments, plans, and philosophy. We discussed why he is now entering mixed martial arts, when his first fight is likely to be, and how he is transitioning from jiu-jitsu and grappling to mixed martial arts. We discussed why he likes to fight and compete, and his philosophy which has made him such an exciting competitor who uses many innovative techniques and wins many of his matches by submission. He explained how jiu-jitsu was instrumental in steering him away from being involved in trouble as a youth, and why such martial arts training is important for the youth today. We discussed his intention of competing in mixed martial arts while continuing to compete in grappling, including the Super Fight in the 2011 ADCC World Championships. And we explored the possibility of grappling becoming popular as a spectator sport, and much more. No Holds Barred: James Feng, Director of Fight Life

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with James Feng, the director of the forthcoming mixed martial arts documentary film "Fight Life". "Fight Life" will attempt to portray the reality of the mixed martial arts business from the standpoint of the professional fighters. From receiving low pay on small shows, to fighting as a profession without any medical insurance, to surviving through their often unglamorous but grueling everyday lives, the documentary will aim at chronicling their real lives, rather than some canned and staged version passed off as a "reality" show. Expected to be released in June 2010, "Fight Life" currently stars Frank Shamrock, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Lyle Beerbohm, Ryan Schultz, Matt Lindland, Miesha Tate, Gilbert Melendez, "Big" John McCarthy, and author Sam Sheridan. We sat down with James Feng to discuss "Fight Life" and what he hopes to accomplish with this film. Ben has recently signed to fight for the Bellator Fighting Championships in their upcoming welterweight (170 pounds) tournament, which will begin in April. Outside of the actual techniques there are some fantastic conditioning segments that present all of the latest and greatest methods for getting in shape.
